Description of material
|
|
HOVADUR® CNP is a precipitation hardenable copper alloy. In hardened condition, the alloy has a specific combination of good mechanical strength and excellent ductility as well as high electrical conductivity. Therefore, it is especially suited for numerous applications in electrical engineering. The alloy is characterized by good fatigue and annealing properties.
The most important practical characteristic is its good cold bending property in hardened condition at acceptable
hardness.

Processing instructions
Hot forming
HOHOVADUR® CNP is suitable for hot forming at temperatures of about 900–700 °C. After forming, quick cooling in water is recommended.
Advice: After a hot forming executed by the customer, the properties of HOVADUR® CNP will normally no longer
be achieved.
Cold forming
Even in condition “cold formed, hardened”, HOVADUR® CNP is well suited for cold forming. Hollow bars (tubes) can be cold bended without any problems when using bending machines with according strength.
In case of other and more important cold formings, HOVADUR® CNP in solution heat treated condition has to be used.
After forming, as a rule, the part has to be heat treated.
Heat treatment
A heat treatment changes the agreed properties. If a heat treatment is executed after supply of the material by SCHMELZMETALL, we cannot guarantee any properties.
Advice for heat treatments (they always depend to a large degree on the kind and the function of the furnace)
Solution heat treatment: 760–820 °C, about 30 minutes followed by quenching in water
Hardening: 420–480 °C, 2–5 h followed by cooling at the air
Machining
In condition “cold formed and hardened” (condition in which the material is supplied by SCHMELZMETALL), machining (e. g. turning, milling, drilling) is possible without any problems. Same tools with same machining data as for alloy CuCr1Zr (HOVADUR® CCZ) can be used. As a matter of principle, hard metal tools combined with cooling with emulsion are recommended.
Joining
In metallic brillant condition, HOVADUR® CNP is suited for soft soldering. Attention must be paid to limiting the temperature to max. 450 °C. Hard soldering with very low melting silver brazing is possible, too. But even if soldering times are limited, a loss in hardness has to be expected. This has to be evaluated as the case arises. HOVADUR® CNP hollow bars (tubes) may be reinforced by welding of ribs/webs which does not change the properties of the material.
They remain the same as before welding (see SCHMELZMETALL – data sheet).
Application examples
Holders, shafts for spot and seam welding of mostly plain steel. Arms and bended arms for spot welding tongs with internal cooling.
